AlunaGeorge: Champagne Eyes | New EP

After a hiatus of a couple of years, the highly anticipated return of AlunaGeorge arrives with the release of their new EP ‘Champagne Eyes’ this week. As the duo’s first independent release away from a major label, it’s clear they have approached this EP with a new creativity and exposing themselves to new possibilities, until they were confident these songs could make a difference.

Though the duo don’t disappoint in delivering their signature ambient grooves with their R&B electronic fusion, the more time with the songs, the huge focus on lyrics and songwriting stands out too. Aluna shows a benevolent side to herself, taking responsibility in her role as an influential artist, and using the chance to reach a wide range of audience to bring understanding to today’s issues.

The topics the EP addresses is very personal to the duo too, and the freedom they chose to express themselves with is admirable. For example, song ‘Famous’ addresses sexual assault, yet showing the positive light of when a girl gets justice (“Now they know what you know // There's nowhere for you to go”). This is an example of how the group emulate hope and a bright future.

Social media can make the world look like a terrible place. But AlunaGeorge take their position as artists and ‘Champagne Eyes’ is their first step in bringing some celebration back in to the world.
