Sofar Sounds: New York City 28/04
We returned to our homely spot of Sofar Sounds NYC to discover what’s new in New York City’s emerging artist scene.
Solo singer songwriter Gabrielle Marlena opened the night, showing us tracks from her upcoming EP. She started the night with her new song ‘Smoking Gun,’ the first single to be released off the EP. She followed on with ‘Rescue,’ which was a throwback to the first single she ever released, and also her claimed favourite song!
J. Stone (aka Mouthmatics) followed the night. Primarily a beatboxer, this guy re-created pop song melodies using just his vocals. Songs beatbox-ed included artists as big as the Beatles to a mash-up of Michael Jackson’s ‘Billy Jean’ and ‘Smooth Criminal.’ His set also featured collaborations with artists Deborah Cher and also Sarah Jones on the electronic violin for a re-creation of Adele’s ‘Rolling In the Deep’ and a hilariously brilliant rendition of Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape of You.’ Stone closed with Avicii’s ‘Wake Me Up,’ only proving his musical brilliance in being able to recreate these millions of songs of all genres.
One of the highlights of the night was when the MC Maya Lorton went on to stage and performed her ‘rap degrading to men’ with him. Some of the funniest lyrics I’ve ever heard, it was a very enjoyable moment!
He commented on how at a Sofar, “the barrier between the artist and the audience is completely removed,” praising the all-inclusive vibe of Sofar, giving artists a chance to interact with their fans – old and new.
Edson Sean closed the night. Another acoustic singer songwriter. His favourite song of mine was ‘BK All Day,’ where he went through all the neighbourhoods of Brooklyn from Flatbush to Bushwick, really making it a New York City Sofar. Oh, and then he gave everyone his home-made cookies at the end… something you’ll only get at a Sofar gig!
Follow Sofar to see what else is new in the world of new talent in NYC, and all over the world for that matter! Definitely one of the most reliable sources of new music there is, so be sure to head to www.sofarsounds.com/nyc and sign up!
