SXSW '17: MTV Woodies
The MTV Woodies return to Austin this year. An event independent on SXSW, it still integrated itself in to the madness of the week filling itself with music fans all over the world.
An event which is usually a fairly commercially pop showcase of new music, with past performers including The Chainsmokers and Lukas Graham, this year saw a much more RnB and hip hop oriented line up, looking to jump on the probable uprising of this genre in the year to come.
Line-up included the best in new hip-hop, including Lil Yachty, Khalid and Young M.A, as well as having the occasional more indie band in line with the classic Woodies look with PVRIS and MUNA- both female fronted rock bands - again credits to MTV for showcasing this revolutionary uprising of new music.
Starley stood out for me most on the night, a new performer yet one who’s had more hits than I realised until I recognised almost all the songs she performed, including electro-RnB-pop fusion commercial hit ‘Call On Me’.
Beginning with a concert of a few hours, the actual awards in themselves took place at 11pm, with winners including the likes of Ed Sheeran and Chainsmokers – who performed at Apple Music’s stage just the previous night at SXSW.
This was definitely on a whole new scale to the rest of SXSW, with huge festival crowds cheering on this array of new music, glow sticks and free booze making for a very branded commercial night, (but it is MTV after all).
Even then, it’s rare to see around ten artists on the brink of breaking in one line up, and with last year’s line up having exploded after, we look forward to what these artists will bring this year!
