SXSW: Nile Rodgers | Keynote Speech
SXSW’s annual music festival, drawing in artists, industry folk, and new-music enthusiasts alike from all over the world, came back to Austin Texas this year. We’re covering the music festival in detail with our top 25 artists we saw perform at the festival, but we also can’t ignore the conference part of the week, bringing you raw and inside industry info and tips from the ones “who’ve seen it all” – starting with Nile Rodgers!
Yes, Nile Rodgers. Guitar legend, most recently known for ‘Get Lucky’ collaboration with Daft Punk. (We even got a little demonstration on the electric guitar how that was put together…. But more on that later).
Rodgers opened with an epic 2 minute super-rushed intro to his life in the form of a video, so as to avoid the “this is how I got into the industry” small talk when he came on. After leaving the audience overwhelmed with his ever-impressive list of collaborations, which must have included, like, every artist you’ve ever heard of, wegot to hear anecdotes and advice from the man himself, and he even so kindly answered questions from the audience at the end.
Rodgers talked about Chic, his relationship with Bowie, the emotions after the death of loved ones, giving some raw advice to the emerging musicians and business enthusiasts in the room, and really everything under the sun any human would like to know from the mind of such an inspirational man. It wasn’t just for the advanced musician, or even the music fan, but any person could take away from this keynote.
Rodgers, at the request of an audience member, demonstrated to us each individual guitar lick and riff he plays in ‘Get Lucky,’ giving us a live demonstration of how each was layered on top of each other to create the sound that is now the song selling by the billions, which was a unique treat I’m sure no-one in that room will ever get again, and we will cherish this time from Mr Nile Rodgers forever!
