INTERVIEW: Tom Walker | Live at Leeds Top 12
Tom Walker took us to Church (Leeds) with Dork at Live at Leeds, performing his set of songs from his debut EP 'Blessings.'
Festivals such as Live at Leeds are always a hit and miss with bands, as the point of these is to perform to new audiences and gain fans. Walker however had clearly achieved a huge following by the time Live at Leeds came around, as the Church was jam packed and each and every person singing along to his biggest hit ‘Leave The Light On.’ ‘Angel’ was also a huge moment in the set, the stained glass behind him and the sunlight shining through making the song all the more atmospheric. A rock ‘n’ roll voice with a heavy production behind him, the high caliber of Walker’s songwriting and performance ability is undoubtable.
Putting his rapid success down to “just having good songs,” Walker listed for us in an interview the other recent milestones he’s considered pivotal in his career, including Radio 1 playlisting, and the huge unexpected consumption of his music in Europe, certified Gold in Germany and Platinum in Switzerland. He describes these things as “all these these you don’t really expect,” unsure himself what was the key in achieving his widespread appraisal.
Able to take advantage of the focused environment that an independent label offers him, signed to Relentless Records, Walker also commended simultaneously “the power of Sony” that accompanies and thus enabling him to have a strong business team behind him who help him reach a global fan base.
His rapid rise to the forefront of new music means that this run of festivals that Walker is doing this summer is probably one of the last times that we will ever get to see him in an intimate setting, so make sure you don’t miss him at the upcoming Great Escape Festival in Brighton next weekend!
