SXSW '17: Mobley | No. 7
We delve further in to our top 10 of our favourite SXSW artists, continuing with no.7, Mobley!
Mobley came to SXSW this year, with a very special spot opening Nile Rodgers’ Keynote Speech for the Music Conference portion of the Festival!
With no introduction, the man just got on stage and started playing, and before we knew it, the audience was momentarily distracted from the highly anticipated keynote and fully drawn in to the brilliance of Mobley.
A one-man show, playing everything from piano to drums to synths, all at an equally advanced standard, as well as vocals which shook the room.
His song ‘Solo,’ this song is just one of the most recognisable songs I’ve heard in a while, melody or instrumentation sounding like nothing else on the market right now. A really dark just energetic sound and message. Song ‘Swoon’ is also a curious, ambient one, with really disjointed lyrics in his performance, making for a highly interesting and innovative composition.
And of course, no one can forget the moment he jumped off his drum stool and somehow magically landed exactly on the drums he needed and started playing. That’s skill, right there.
It’s still beyond me how he created such a huge sound on stage on his own, but as is the magic of the multi-instrumentalist, and though till taken-aback, I’m glad I was there to enjoy it. A complete surprise I’m lucky I came across!
