SXSW '17: Caitlyn Smith | No.24
We continue our countdown of our favourite SXSW artists we saw in Austin last week, with Caitlyn Smith!
Known for her commercial songwriting, including penning John Legend and Meghan Trainor’s ‘Like I’m Gonna Lose You,’ Caitlyn appears at SXSW to show us the performer side of herself too.
A Nashville legend, Caitlyn brings her folk-pop tunes to a wider audience here, dubbing herself an ‘Americana’ artist, bringing her US roots to the forefront of her writing.
Caitlyn showcased songs from her new EP ‘Starfire,’ her first EP as a singer-songwriter in a few years released just earlier this month.
The songs she performed sounded really raw, to mean they were truly Caitlyn and fully what she wanted to say, coming straight from her. ‘Before You Called Me Baby’ was the perfect example of this. I could tell she was definitely a Nashville native from the sound of this one, the melodies and the strumming together, and the lyrics and tone of her voice just being incredibly distinct. Even her performance of pop ‘Like I’m Gonna Lose You,’ had a whole new perspective hearing her acoustic, rich voice present the song.
Though her song ‘This Town Is Killing Me,’ is all about about the negative effect trying to make a music career in Nashville had on her, hearing some Nashville audience in the crowd talk about her and her influence in Nashville was an inspirational moment.
We’re glad she made it to Austin! Stay here for the complete round-up of the top 25 artists we saw at SXSW this year, from all over the world!
