The annual Great Escape Festival – UK’s answer to SXSW – is already beginning, as in anticipation for the weekend of new music in May, this week sees venues all over East London taken over by the “First Fifty” artists announced!

With numerous gigs happening simultaneously, we couldn’t be in 5 places at once, but we did make it to The Pleasant Courtyard to have a night with international emerging bands with Australia’s Stella Donnelly, UK’s Stereo Honey, Sweden’s Ruby Empress, and Scandinavia’s M.I.L.K.

Stella Donnelly is a one-woman performer carrying her entire sound in just her vocals and her electric guitar, an admirable skill in itself. A venue quiet as ever with full undivided focus on Stella, her stories threading her songs together added an extra charm to her set as we were able to understand what each song meant to her.

Stereo Honey followed, closing on their new release ‘Angel.’ For a band who’ve been gigging together for less than a year, it’s phenomenal the amount of recognition they’ve already received. The four-piece indie group show a raw ambition on stage, delivering impressively slick songs and a definite one to watch.

Ruby Empress continued the night. Proving themselves to be the most memorable artists of the night, it was clear the group just love performing. The group had their own individual visual aesthetic in their outfits, and frontman Tom Serner’s had stage presence which ensured the audience couldn’t take their eyes off him.

M.I.L.K finished the night, taking us away from the guitar heavy music that his fellow line up presented before him, and performed an ambient electro-pop style set. Firmly part of the production heavy wave, he hypnotised with his dream-like tranquil melodies what was a full room by now eager to see more.

The four acts left the crowd in huge anticipation for the upcoming festival, and keep an eye out to hear further announcements for The Great Escape! Head back to the Pleasant Courtyard tonight for more of the Great Escape’s First Fifty with BBC Introducing!
