Calvin Harris | Apple Music Festival 2016

Each year the Apple Music Festival has a night of a DJ set amongst its 10 days of the biggest and best music, and this year Calvin Harris honoured this post with an hour and a half of his biggest hits and beats, turning the Roundhouse momentarily into a nightclub.

Calvin’s set comprised of his most popular collaborations, featuring singers such as Florence Welch, and multiple Ellie Goulding, and Rihanna hits.  There was no live performance in this set - not even on his own songs, where it would have been cool to hear him sing –  but even then, he still carried the crowd brilliantly throughout! Sometimes he played songs all the way through in their original mix, and sometimes he just played a snippet of the song and showed us his amazing live remixing rest of the time.

The production of Calvin’s set tonight was really what made the performance so epic, and about so much more than just the music. ‘We Found Love’ was one of the best performances of the night, visually- rainbow strobe lights filled the room, and in Calvin’s remix of Beardyman’s ‘Eat Sleep Rave Repeat,’ pyrotechnics filled the stage – the first uses of fire in the festival!

Calvin featured what seemed to be a little rap section in the middle, playing out his hits with Big Sean and Tinie Tempah, and Dizzie Rascal (And even though it wouldn’t have fit, I was sad to see ‘Dance Wiv Me’ not performed, as this was the first song I discovered Calvin with years ago!).

Typically, he performed his best hits at end, ending with ‘We Found Love,’ ‘We’ll Be Coming Back,’ and ‘How Deep Is Your Love.’ Though he wasn’t singing live, he played out on two of his own songs ‘Summer’ and ‘My Way.’

It was definitely interesting to see a venue where I have seen endless amounts of live music transformed into a club, with the DJ high up on a platform on the stage, and the audience dancing the hardest they probably will in the entire festival!

Full coverage of the Apple Music Festival to come on Concentus Music, as we prepare for our very own Concentus Music Live at The Roundhouse this December!
