Herbie Hancock, Live: Austin, Texas

I completely fell in love with jazz after hitting the NYC jazz clubs! And so ahead of their appearance at New Orleans Jazz Festival, I was so honoured to have the chance to watch jazz legends Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter live in Austin, Texas, during Jazz Appreciation Month.

Hancock’s Grammy Award was presented at the start of the night, winning this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award. This was such an amazing chance to see a Grammy presented live, and that too by last year’s Grammy Awards’ Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Wayne Shorter presented. In his acceptance speech, Hancock expressed how special it is to see young people appreciate new music of Jazz, and how it is “new every day because it is improvised.” Hancock and Shorter in their duo performance perfectly demonstrated this beauty of jazz.

Hancock’s piano playing was really special, only enhanced by Shorter’s legendary saxophone playing. As well as their signature instruments, he two also played a variety throughout, including some very new style synthesiser type sounds. Synths seem to be a huge rising element in jazz music – but as Hancock started the night by saying, jazz is new every day!

It was a great honour to be a part of the audience and experience this performance and watch jazz royalty live! The celebrations of jazz continue with New Orleans’ Jazz and Heritage Festival this month, so if you’re in the area, you want to get on this American jazz wave!
