ISLAND RECORDS Sofar Sounds: London 08/03
Island Records have teamed up with Sofar London for this Sofar Tour, bringing you their newest and brightest new signings!
Tom Prior bought his stripped back Indie Rock for us. I've never heard such a clear voice, his favourite song of mine being 'Take It All.' Tom also performed songs off his new EP 'Paint The Ceiling Blue' which were being handed out by the good man in the marijuana hat, of course. But - in all seriousness - Tom's voice is something special!
Lauren Aquilina continued the night. This 20 year old singer songwriter is really one of a kind - from her songs to her personality! After supporting Taylor Swift last year, I felt really lucky to be able to see her in this up close and intimate setting at Carousel London where the night took place. She's got that T-Swizzle-esque element to her come to think of it, writing her heart out and letting us into her life through her songs (and really cool tattoo..), 'Thinking About' being my favourite song. As well as her new songs, like next single 'Kicks,' she also performed 'Fools' which was the first song she ever released at age 16, so it was great to have the opportunity to listen to that live!
Flyte completed the night. This four-piece Beatles type band have been underground for a while recording, so this Sofar tour was their first performance in AGES- though it didn't seem it! They opened with a tribute to Bowie, performing his song 'Five Years' in great grace. They also performed originals, 'Orphans of the Storm' and 'Chasing Heaven,' my favourite one, and 'Faithless.' The brilliance of this band is obvious through the requested encore - something surprisingly rare in a Sofar (the only other time I've seen it is when Newton Faulkner performed!). So it was a nice lucky present to be able to see these guys last night.
And of course, we can't forget legendary MC Jack Hodges- who even made the audience sing at one point. We love him really.
As Tom Prior described it, Sofar is "like sex.. Once you start to get into it it's already over." Somehow that statement sums up the night perfectly. I never want these nights to end - between the great music and sense of community, Sofar is one of a kind! GO TO ONE!
