REVIEW: Leo Stannard + Kawala | Leeds
Leeds’ Headrow House welcomed Leo Stannard during his UK tour. An indie singer songwriter (How often do you get those?), it was cool to see a big voice in a small venue, something which we may not b able to do in a few years with Leo!
More than just a singer with a guitar though, he’s also a very strong guitarist instrumentalist. He played his song ‘Lost’ with his guitar horizontal, plucking the strings from above, giving a really short and sweet tone to each note on the guitar, a sound not possible from the usual strumming.
His song ‘Moments’ was another favourite of mine, just because of the story behind it that he wrote it in Los Angeles, making it a really curious and at times mysterious inspiration.
We also got to hear new song ‘Oceans,’ in which I’d say we got to hear his voice at it’s best, hearing his higher range and also a very soulful side to the voice really prominently, which was great as it has been coming through in touches throughout the rest of the set.
Opening for Leo on his tour were our favourite boys Kawala. They headlined our sold out Barfly gig at the beginning of the year so it was so cool to run in to them again at this gig, especially as Leeds was where they became ‘Kawala’! Jim and Daniel just as a duo for this round, it was such a bonus to hear my favourite tracks like ‘Funky’ and ‘Mighty River’ (even if that’s not their favourite song!).
We also interviewed Leo for our radio show, to be out soon! Lots of love to the rising folk-indie-acoustic music!
