Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards 2016
BBC Radio 6’s Gilles Peterson brought his annual Worldwide Awards to KOKO last night, for a night of the best music from all around the world, showcasing music from jazz to hip hop to DJs.
Matthew Halsall & The Gondwana Orchestra opened the night with a mellow jazz set, which also included a harp in the band!
Los Angeles’ Anderson .Paak just blew everyone away. This guy is so multi-talented and full of surprises, and just proves that the USA’s music industry is far on top! He went from this grime, hip-hop sort of vibe straight into this amazing soul sort of song where he was playing the drums and singing at the same time – a combination only the best can do!
The Worldwide Awards’ “Superband” also performed a couple of sets – the second set being particularly astonishing, with Eska, Pete Josef – who also won an award on the night – and Little Simz.
Little Simz’s performance was one of the most interesting, particularly with her use of instrumentation, using a huge trombone in place of synths, serving as the bass line! Never seen that before…
And of course, the awards presentations themselves – this included many awards celebrating music from all around the world – the biggest awards of the night ‘Label of the Year’ going to Ninja Tune, and ‘Track of the Year’ going to DJ Khalab and Baba Sissoko’s ‘Tata’ – DJ Khalab then spun some tracks for the audience, which was also one of the most lively DJ sets I’d ever heard!
It was great being immersed in music from around the world, music that I don’t usually hear everyday, and being introduced to all sorts of new genres and talent – Anderson .Paak being my favourite part of the night!
