EP / LIVE REVIEW: Island 'Girl'

Island are the one of the fastest rising newest Indie bands in the UK. This four-piece just sold out The Victoria in Dalston for their first headline show this month, as well as being named Rough Trade’s ‘Artist of the Week’ with an in-house showcase.

Island are your classic four-piece alternative indie band, except they come with a much darker edge to their sound- and a whole lot of hair! Their debut EP ‘Girl’ was just released, and features their biggest song ‘Stargazer’ too – their first single off the EP.

'Stargazer' is a really arty song, which is what makes this band so much cooler than most the others out there right now. They use their instruments and voices in different ways and their arrangements are so unique and unpredictable, creating a really ambient and enigmatic sound for themselves.

Their song ‘I’ve Been Searching,’ also from the EP, was my favourite one live. The lyrics are really thoughtful and the whole sound of it, particularly the guitars, make a really bright sound.

Their big headline show at The Victoria had an amazing vibe, and so great to see such a new band sell-out when they have just released their debut EP! The band also performed some of their older songs, including one I really liked ‘Delilah,’ the second song they ever wrote together as a band.

Their acoustic stripped back gig at Rough Trade West (left) just two days later was just as stunning– Rollo’s voice especially stood out here. (Oh, and James knocked down all the CDs in the store with his bass.)

Congrats to the guys on the killer end to the year-and Beatnik Creative for getting them here!

Make sure to check out their next headline gig at Hackney’s Oslo in April!
