Sam Fender | SXSW Top 25

Sam Fender plays in the States for the first time ever at this year’s SXSW, starting off his run at BBC Radio 2’s stage with Jo Whiley at the British Music Embassy, Latitude 30 venue.

Assuring the audience that Sam Fender is indeed his real name, taking his music for the first time outside of Europe, his audiences saw a healthy mix of home-grown British supporters as well as an accumulation of newly acquired international fans, marking the start of his global takeover.

Having only released a handful of songs online so far, he played his audiences’ particular favourite ‘Greasy Spoon,’ which sees the lyrics ‘I am a woman,’ putting himself in the shoes of women and exploring the sexual harassment they face. Other ones performed on the night include ‘Millennial’ and ‘Play God,’ all demonstrating Sam’s own interesting perspective on the world and talking about topics not covered often in pop music today.

He successfully powered through the technical issues that initially delayed his set, and he and the band proved themselves to be one of the favourites from the BBC’s picks that week.

Sam will grace the cover of the next issue of the Concentus Music Magazine so make sure to keep an eye out!
