Wallows | SXSW Top 25

Wallows took over the Pandora Stage at this year’s festival. A pop-tastic band born and bred from Los Angeles, and not short on fan girls, on first impression Wallows become your typical all-American boy band.

However, the longer you spend with their music, their advanced musicality talent becomes more and more apparent and impressive. A beautiful edge to Wallows’ story is their childhood friendship that the band blossomed from. They’re not a band because they are Los Angeles wannabes, they are a band because they grew up with music. The core trio, Dylan, Braeden and Cole, met each other through extra-curricular and summer camps back when they were in elementary / middle school (primary school for us Brits), and a number of the group are now studying together at USC’s Thornton School of Music.

Wallows also often feature trumpeter Danny on their live tours, which adds a whole new dimension to this otherwise indie-pop group. The trumpet unexpectedly yet perfectly compliments the electric guitars that otherwise form the instrumentation of their songs.

There was something liberating about listening to such dynamic music in this outdoor music on one of the last nights of the festival. Wallows are hitting London next week with two (almost) sold out shows in Hoxton, make sure you don’t miss out!
