Daniel Glass - President of Glassnote Records | SXSW 2018 Featured Speaker

Daniel Glass - President of Glassnote Records | SXSW 2018 Featured Speaker “There are only three things you can guarantee someone does each day: Eat breakfast, Eat dinner, and go to the toilet,” emphasising the fickleness of anything else you do as an artist or in the business….explains Daniel Glass as this year’s Featured Speaker for the SXSW Music Conference.

The Glassnote Records’ founder and President is always a favourite at conferences, continuously making efforts and appearances to talk to aspiring artists and music industry enthusiasts. He provides tips and tricks for finding success on both sides of the industry, as well as giving insights specifically in to Glassnote as a company.

Glass could not emphasise more the importance of a strong network and community, using the example of his own label where his past interns over the years are now his senior staff or senior elsewhere in the industry, demonstrating how creating a family in his label is one of the main reasons for their artists’ success, and how everyone in the industry grows together.

Glass also interestingly enough dismissed the all-too-common façade of bidding wars that often take place between labels trying to sign artists, clarifying that Glassnote run on chemistry, disinterested in having to compete for an artist.

An example of this is Glass’ anecdote and introduction to his new signing William Prince, recalling the story where they met at Canada’s JUNO Awards where the artist was performing, and after a conversation at the event, they instinctively knew they should be a pair.

Glassnote Records has always been a personal favourite of mine, rightly so earning the title of the leading independent label, and removing the stigma around this title by having a run of successes including past Mumford & Sons and Childish Gambino in the States. They are also developing newer artists such as Ider in the UK, and most prominently, have found the world’s brightest star in Jade Bird.

Bird performed an impressive run of 13 sets at this year’s festival and proved to be a favourite of the festival, and Glass’ proud Dad moment was no secret, solidly supporting her at each of her shows and more. Bird is just one example of the kind of talent that Glass has the ability to foster, so if you ever get a chance to hear from Glass himself, take the advice without hesitation!
